A HOST of Manchester City legends will lace up their boots again by backing a charity event in memory of two much-loved police officers.
Former Blues stars Peter Barnes, Asa Harford and Uwe Rosler are among a raft of veteran players who will line up against a Greater Manchester Police XI at Hyde FC’s Ewen Fields on Sunday (2pm).
The match is a fund-raiser for the families of PCs Nicola Hughes, of Diggle, and her colleague Fiona Bone who were killed in the line of duty in September.
A Manchester City spokesman said: “We hope as many of our fans as possible can show their support and attend this very special game.”
Matchday admission is £5 for adults with children, while OAPs go free.
In a separate fund-raiser, the public are are also urged to take part in the Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes Fallen Heroes Memorial 5km Road Race which takes place in Littleborough, Rochdale, on Sunday, December 2.
Former police officer and road race organiser Andy O’Sullivan was awarded an MBE for his services to athletics and charity fund-raising in 2005.
He said: “I want to do my bit along with so many others.
“This tragedy shocked the nation and I am hoping for a large turnout from all parts of the community, the larger police family and perhaps some television celebrities.”
Four-time Olympian Diane Modahl and road-running stalwart Ron Hill will be in attendance for the race, which begins at 11.15am from the Falcon Inn, Church Street.
Entry is £6 to club runners, £8 unaffiliated (£1 extra on day) and applications can be made online at www.ukresults.net.
