Closure plans are attacked

THE Government's announcement that jobcentres across the UK will close has been slammed by MP Debbie Abrahams

The MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth said the closures would affect up to 750 jobs as well as bringing additional travelling time and costs for job seekers.

Last week the Government confirmed that centres across the UK will close with further closures planned for 2018 and 2023.

While Oldham was rumoured to be on the closure list, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed there are no plans to close it.

The plans will see smaller jobcentres merged with larger ones and others co-located with local government premises, allowing the DWP the ability to offer a more efficient service, the DWP said.

They went on to say it would deliver savings of over £140million a year for the next 10 years with the support for jobseekers being strengthened this year as more work coaches are recruited in every nation and region of the UK.

Damian Hinds, Minister for Employment, said: "We will always make sure that people have the support they need to get into and progress within work.

"These changes reflect the fact that more people access their benefits online resulting in many of our buildings being underused.

"We're merging some offices and locating other jobcentres with local authorities to make sure that the welfare state and our employment support works for those who need it and those who pay for it."

However, Debbie Abrahams said there has been no answer from the government about how it will affect people using the centres.

She said: "The government is planning to force a million more working people to attend a jobcentre, under its plans for in-work sanctions, while simultaneously closing almost one in every ten jobcentres across the country.

"A decision that affects up to 750 jobs.

"There have been no answers from the government about the additional travelling time and costs people will face, how sick and disabled people will be affected, or people who are in low paid work facing 'in-work conditionality' if they receive tax credit or Universal Credit income 'top ups'."

Is there anything this woman doesn't want to waste money on? If all her squandering was added together it would probably outstrip the national deficit for her constituency alone.
She never has a constructive suggestion for raising funds or helping taxpayers, just more stripping of the money tree until its dead.
Those of us who remember the last times (plural) Labour bankrupted the country know exactly what she's about.

It is a very sensible plan to merge smaller centres. I don't understand Debbie at all concentrate on Oldham. It is quite clear that Oldham job centre is not to close.

What is wrong with expecting job seekers to travel for their appointments? Those that appear on the various TVs programmes have plenty of time to play on their Xbox games. Ms Abrahams needs to wake up to the fact of the high numbers of workshy scrounges in this area.

Flake!...OK we all know that you are a Tory supporter, so will you stop slagging off Labour at any given opportunity, you're just boring us all!....and yes, we all know that (Plural) means more than one!....Thinking you are cleverer than the rest of us as usual. Big headed comes to mind!

Get it right clearly you don't have the insight into Debbies mind.
It's just far to difficult to expect the huge numbers of people who can't speak a word of English to travel long distances on public transports amongst all the white people who are clearly nearly all far right extremist racists !

Rubbish from Flake please get your facts right

`get it right` your comments are bigoted to say the least, which people appear on which tv programmes ?if you mean you are a watcher of all the people on benefits programs on ch5 then you too have time to spare to idle your time away.read the story properly, disabled people, low paid workers could also be affected as well as people seeking work..thousands of immigrants in this town arnt working do you mean those too..or is it just xbox users you dont like

skay I am not a Tory supporter, as I believe Cameron who was a far leftist with connections to the Socialist Workers Party moved them to occupy the position Nu Liebour once sat, as Labour moved back to the far left and added a dose of anti Semitism.
lakeman how is it that every time someone says something you don't agree with a meaningless bully word has to be coined? Bigoted is the latest on the left have seized on. The only reason to use it is to silence opposition through fear.

I love some of the comments...are not job centre's now known as the Conservative sanctions on the poor department!, yes there are work shy!, there always has been, and always will be...we could also say that if those with the capacity to pay their taxes, like I do!...ie the rich and so called middle class, there would hardly be a deficit if any!...but we never see so called politicians level sanctions at these people!..you could say they endorse it, its time to get real folks!.

flake me on the left ,get a grip tommy robinsons top of my pops at the moment, now you will call me a racist..sinc when has the word bigoted meant bullying and
fearfulness.get a grip woman.every time ms abraham speaks you are on her like a rash, you`re jealous of her for some reason, even when her points are valid you slate her.in your own mind you are better than everyone else ,and `all white people are nearly all far right extremist racists`is extreme to say the least

Does Mrs Abrahams get an allowance for all the shoes she must wear out chasing bandwagons?
