Fundraisers run to aid memorial

CHILDREN from Saddleworth were among those who ran a two-mile circuit in Greenfield over the weekend in a show of support for fallen officers.

Uppermill AFC players and local residents donned their running shoes for the Run to Remember event in aid of the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund.

They were joined by Nicola's father Bryn Hughes who set up the memorial fund after his daughter was murdered in 2012.

Club secretary Michelle Simpson said: "Unfortunately we only had 12 runners turn up but we had a good run anyway.

"We gave prizes to the first man and woman across the line. One lady said it was the perfect race for her as she had just started running again and it was a lovely atmosphere, perfect length and for such a good cause.

"Another said it was such a shame more didn't come down as it was such a worthwhile cause but it was great to be doing it."

Runners set off from Churchill Fields at 10am, joining hundreds of others who are mid-way through a Run to Remember challenge to run two miles per day for 100 days.

They raised a total of £50 at the event but this will be added to another £200 raised by Uppermill FC staff who are completing the full Run to Remember.

Uppermill AFC said: "Thanks to all who came to support and take part in the fun run, and thanks to Bryn Hughes for coming along. Congratulations to Thomas for being first to finish, closely followed by Guy."

Bryn set up the memorial fund which aims to provide learning opportunities and pre-employment skills for children who have suffered the loss of a close family member through a violent crime.

In September 2012, PC Nicola Hughes (23), of Diggle, and her colleague PC Fiona Bone (32) of Sale, were murdered in a gun and grenade attack as they investigated a hoax burglary call in Mottram, Tameside.

Uppermill AFC Club Secretary Michelle Simpson said: "We thought the run was a very good way of showing support and raising money for the charity."
